Kicking where it counts (Paris Saint-Germain Football Club, 2018/19)

Paris Saint-Germain Football Club, known as PSG, is one of France’s most popular clubs and competes in Ligue 1, the top division of French football. First impressions of their 2018/19 annual report? The colours match the club logo, and information is well-compartmentalised.

What’s more, the style of the cursor on screen serves as a subtle nudge to the reader to keep moving through the report. Animation of images and text in each section is smooth and clean – fluid, almost.

The first page immediately loads to Chapter 1 (of 5), diving right into the content. It is not difficult to figure out how to navigate this well-structured report. Each chapter has a number of subsections, consisting of not simply text but a combination of photographs, videos and detailed figures, relevant to each section. The information provided is detailed and transparent, while the format of each section is consistent.

Entering a section, browsing through it and scrolling right down takes the reader automatically to the next section, assisting in creating a flow of information. Text appears in small snippets with the option of expanding a paragraph to read further, thereby preventing the text from cluttering the screen and distracting the reader.

To make navigation even easier, a quick-access menu on the top right of the page expands to reveal a chapter breakdown with all subsections, ready to transport the reader directly to the desired section of the report.

Photography throughout the report varies from artistic images to candid ones and even slightly blurred images, but despite disparate styles and quality, the pull of the report is strong: mainly due to design, easy navigation and the value of the information presented.

The report can be read in both French and English, and is also available as a downloadable PDF (link accessible through the menu).

While most people immediately associate PSG with football, the club’s annual report for 2018/19 presents to the reader a side to the club outside of just the sport. PSG encourages the reader to take a look at PSG through a broader lens and see that PSG’s goals involve much more than simply kicking a football into a net.
